1. What is the first step?
Simply give us a call and I will begin working with you on your project.
2. Do you charge a fee for the first visit or design?
No, the first visit and design consultation are complimentary.
3. Where does the appointment take place?
An onsite survey of the space is recommended for all remodeling projects.
4. Can a general price range be given prior to a design?
Yes, we can provide you with some budgetary numbers based on previous projects that are similar to yours. However product selection can vary project cost significantly.
5. This is our first remodeling project; can you help us with the process?
Yes, our experience with a wide range of remodeling projects enables us to provide guidance every step of the way.
6. What type of projects does your company normally handle?
Our most common projects include; kitchens, baths, siding, decks and windows. We have provided structural repairs as well as custom carpentry.
7. What if our project requires an Architect or Engineer?
Holm Construction works directly with various Architects and Engineers that will assist in the planning process. If you have a design professional already chosen we are happy to work with them.
8. Who is responsible for obtaining permits?
Holm Construction will apply and obtain all necessary permits for your project, these can include county building permits, TRPA, Lahonton water district as well as local municipalities.
9. Do I really need a permit?
Part of our commitment to making your home better is to not leave you with a nagging problem when you go to sell your house. Plus do you want your job shut down mid construction due to lack of permits? If a project requires a permit, we get it.
10. What is coverage?
In the Tahoe basin TRPA has mandated that only a certain percentage of your property may be covered with impervious surfaces. The percentages vary based upon your location, slope and environment. In some situations homeowners have maxed out their allowable coverage, and therefore would be unable to add a new deck. We are able to help determine the feasibility of your project, bringing in the appropriate professionals to get it done.
11. What are BMPs?
Best management practices are a basinwide project to improve the clarity of lake Tahoe by reducing runoff. Every property in the basin will be required to have BMPs done at some point. There are times when BMP work must be completed prior to getting a building permit. We recommend Basile Management Practice as the local pro for both design and install of BMPs. http://www.bmptahoe.com/
12. I have heard that you aren’t allowed to dig in the winter.
There are rules that affect digging in the Tahoe basin from October 15 until May 15. These apply to digging over 3 yards of earth. We have found that most of our projects, even large decks, can often be completed under this threshold.
13. Do you work all winter?
Yes. Both inside and out.
14. Who will run the project?
Depending on the complexity of your project a project manager will be selected and will remain with your project until completion.
15. Wouldn’t it be cheaper if you got some of those guys from 7-11 for the grunt work?
Possibly, however if one of my legal and fully insured employees got injured you the homeowner are fully protected from liability. It is one example of my respect to the homeowner that I pay my employees a fair livable wage. They are skilled, smart and trustworthy and I believe that they are worth every penny.
16. Will someone be able to assist me with all the product selections?
Yes, with our primary vendors showrooms are available to make selections. While I will assist you with selections, in some situations hiring a professional designer can be beneficial.
17. Can I get materials wherever I want?
Yes, however the vendors that Holm Construction recommends have been chosen due to their ability to deliver quality products at the correct price at the right time. We have had situations where the great deal on ebay led to major modifications and project delays.
